26.4 Backup, Restore and Moving a Project

A project – data model, workbooks, users and all – can be saved as one backup file, restored elsewhere, or moved to another kind of storage.

Backup

File (the round button before build 20348) → Backup (Ctrl+Alt+B) saves the whole project as an .acbak file, named after the project and today's date. Use it before big changes, and to move a project to another PC or customer.

Type the file name with the .acbak extension – a name without an extension may be saved as an old-style backup.

Install/Restore

File → Install/Restore (Ctrl+I):

  1. If a project is open, Modeller offers to close it.
  2. In Restore Backup, click Browse... and choose an .acbak or .acproj file (older .abk backups also work).
  3. Click Continue.

Modeller then saves the restored project – asking where to store it, see 20.2 Starting Modeller and Opening a Project – and registers it, so it appears in the login list.

This is also the way to open a project you got from someone else.

Move Repository

PROJECT → Move repository – also in the File menu below Save, or right-click Metadata in the Object Tree – moves the project to another kind of storage – e.g. from a file to a database when more people need to work on it:

To What happens
File Choose the .acproj file name; saved right away
Project Folder Choose an empty folder
Database Enter the database connection; Modeller creates the repository tables

Moves to a folder or database are completed when you save.

Tips – Backup, Restore and Moving

  • Keep backups outside Modeller's program folder (the default) – e.g. on a server that is backed up.
  • After restoring at another customer, check the data source connection – see 21.2 Connecting to a Database.
