23.3 Hierarchies

A hierarchy is a named drill path through units, e.g. Year → Quarter → Month → Date, or Country → City → Customer. Datashop designers can choose a hierarchy for a column, so users drill along it – see 13.5 Drill Settings for Designers.

Creating a Hierarchy

  1. Select the top unit of the path in the Object Tree, e.g. Year.
  2. New Hierarchy (Ctrl+H, or HOME → New).

Modeller follows the unit's Child chain down and names the hierarchy after the first and last unit, e.g. Year..Date. It appears under the dimension in the Object Tree.

Select a unit, not the dimension – with a dimension selected, New Hierarchy does nothing.

Editing a Hierarchy

Select the hierarchy: the Hierarchy tab shows its Units from top to bottom, and a Preview.

  • Right-click → Insert unit adds a unit above the selected one (or at the bottom); you can also drag units from the Object Tree.
  • Right-click → Remove Unit removes one.

Units from other dimensions and units out of parent-child order are allowed – Modeller asks you to confirm.

A dimension can have any number of hierarchies.
