8.7 Buttons

Buttons let users act with one click: open another workbook, open a web page, or run another action such as printing or refreshing. They are the natural way to build navigation between workbooks – e.g. from a cockpit to detailed analyses.

Setting Up a Button

Insert a Button from the Visuals palette, then:

  1. On the BUTTON tab, set the Title (the text on the button) and an optional Hint (shown when users hover over it).
  2. On the ACTION tab, choose what it does: Open workbook, Open browser (a web page) or Other action. Clear removes the action.
  3. Choose which filters to pass on to the workbook it opens – see below.

The BUTTON tab

BUTTON tab setting What it does
Title, Hint Text on the button and its tooltip
Select button image, Clear picture An image on the button
Position Where the image is: Picture left, right, top or bottom
Margin, Spacing Distance between edge, image and text

Passing Filters On

When a button opens another workbook, it can pass the current filters on, so the user keeps the context – e.g. the selected customer and period. On the ACTION tab:

The ACTION tab

Group What it does
Transfer filters None, All, Only the chosen filters, or All, except the chosen ones
Direct filters Which of the workbook's direct filters to pass on
Filter panel Which Filter Panel filters to pass on
Graph as filter Pass on the selection in charts used as filters

Actions and action links are explained in Chapter 13 Actions and Interactivity; passing filters in 13.3 Opening Workbooks and Passing Filters.
